Our commitment

Human rights is intrinsic to the Coates business and living our value of ‘Care Deeply'. For Coates, the safety and wellbeing of its people, customers and communities has always been its highest priority and we wish to ensure that all people who are within or are affected by our sphere of influence have their right to liberty and freedom and their pursuit of happiness respected and upheld.

By acting responsibly and doing the right thing by our people, customers, communities and supply chains, we encourage and expect the same behaviour from our own suppliers and external stakeholders in their support of human rights and the way in which they care for their own people.

The purpose of this Statement is to set out the human rights responsibilities and duties we have towards our employees and the communities that we work with and within, and/or other people affected by our operations.

Key principles

Work rights

We are actively committed to supporting fair work practices within our business and supply chain, and rejecting and condemning unfair practices. Our human rights statement speaks to:

  • Slavery, child labour, forced labour and human trafficking, ethical supply chain practice
  • Appropriate pay, working hours, collective bargaining
  • Discrimination, diversity & inclusion
  • Health, safety and security at work

Grievances

All employees with a genuine concern in regards to Coates’ involvement in activities that cause adverse human rights impacts have access to effective grievance mechanisms and will be protected from any detrimental treatment in raising their concern/s. Where we identify that we have caused or contributed to human rights harm, we commit to provide for, or cooperate in remediation for those impacted.

Indigenous rights

We uphold and respect the rights of the First Nations People, their culture and connection to land and water is integral to the operation of the business. Our Reconciliation Action Plan supports the National Reconciliation Movement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.

Community & stakeholder engagement

We uphold the human rights of the communities in which we operate as well as strive to create a positive social and sustainable impact is inherent to the way the business operates. The Coates Sustainability Playbook outlines the responsibilities our business has towards the communities we interact with.

Privacy

We recognise the responsibilities to protect personal information, individual confidentiality, security of data as well as ensuring every individual’s right to privacy in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Whistleblower reports

Serious concerns of misconduct or an improper state of affairs at Coates (that are not personal work-related grievances) can be reported and will be investigated in accordance with Coates’ Whistleblower Policy.
