When to use a mini excavator

Mini excavator hire is a handy alternative when you don't need a full-size digger, but you still want that same high performance. Don't let their size fool you – these compact machines still pack a punch. They're also extremely versatile for all sorts of tasks around the work site or even at home, from digging and trenching to demolition.

If you're thinking about hiring a mini excavator in Australia, find out about their benefits, uses and other important things you need to know first.

Large excavators aren't always necessary or practical, especially on a smaller site. Mini hydraulic excavators (Mhex) can do most things a larger machine can, but they also have some unique advantages, such as:

  • Easier access – mini diggers can go where larger ones can't, from tight spaces to interiors and softer ground.

  • Easy to transport – small excavators can fit on a trailer or pickup bed, making transport less of a hassle and cheaper too.

  • Less wear and tear – light equipment is less likely to damage surfaces and structures than a heavy vehicle, and less preparation is needed.

  •

More efficient – mini excavators use less power (10-40kW) for cheaper operation and a smaller carbon footprint.

  •

Less noise pollution – quieter than heavy equipment, you're less likely to receive complaints from neighbours when using compact excavators.

What can mini excavators be used for?

Mini excavator hire can take care of a huge variety of jobs on construction sites or in your backyard, whether you need to dig holes or flatten ground.

They're typically used for small to medium-sized projects, but they can also work alongside full-size excavators on larger sites when more precision or accessibility is needed.

These versatile machines can be used for:

  •

    digging holes, foundations and ponds

  •

creating utility trenches and drainage ditches

  •

    drilling and backfilling

  •

levelling ground and removing tree stumps

  •

demolishing concrete, asphalt, steel and small structures

  •

    snow ploughing

Who can operate mini excavators?

Compact excavators are easy to use, but you need to have training from a professional before you use the equipment yourself. Depending on where you are in Australia, you may need a licence to operate a mini excavator. Your equipment hire company will let you know if that's the case.

Mini excavators have the same full range of motion as larger models, with cabs that turn 360 degrees to make loading and dumping easy. If it's your first time at the controls, you should test the equipment in a safe location away from hazards and people before taking it onto the site.
