Knuckle boom lifts, also known as articulated boom lifts, are versatile elevated work platforms designed to solve access challenges in complex environments. Their jointed or articulated design allows the boom sections to bend, enabling operators to reach up, over and around obstacles, positioning workers or tools precisely. Unlike traditional straight booms, a knuckle boom lift provides both vertical and horizontal reach, providing enhanced versatility for tough jobs.
Common applications for knuckle boom hire include construction sites, where they can reach over barriers; building maintenance tasks like window cleaning or facade repairs; and warehouses, offering access to high shelving for lighting or HVAC maintenance. Their flexibility also makes knuckle boom lifts ideal for utilities, infrastructure, event setups and outdoor tasks such as tree pruning or bridge inspections.
To ensure safety during knuckle boom hire, always: Conduct a pre-use inspection
If you’re unsure on any of the above, always refer to the manufacturer’s specifications and operating manual before starting work
A knuckle boom lift can be used both indoors and outdoors. For indoor use, choose electric models with non-marking tyres to prevent emissions and floor damage. For outdoor use, diesel or hybrid boom lift models are ideal, as they offer greater power and adaptability to uneven or rough terrain.
You need a High-Risk Work Licence (WP class) to operate a knuckle boom lift with a boom length of 11 metres or more. For smaller lifts, while a licence isn't required for boom lift hire, proper training and competency in safe operation are mandatory under workplace safety regulations.
