03 APRIL 2019

Hi everyone!

After being a support act at the Formula 1 Grand Prix, it’s nice to go back to a standalone Supercars event this weekend, at Symmons Plains Raceway for the Tasmania SuperSprint.

I’m looking forward to longer practice sessions, more time on track, more tyres to use, a different qualifying format and longer races that require a bit more strategy than the AGP races did.

I’m encouraged with the way our BJR cars are going the moment. We’ve been one of the quicker Holdens over the first two rounds which is a positive. Sladey getting a podium at the Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon was a good result also.

The Symmons Plains circuit has been a weaker track for me personally over the years, especially in qualifying trim. I’ve only had one top-ten qualifying result in the 12 races I’ve done there in a Supercar, so that’s definitely the area I’ll be working to improve on.

We return to the qualifying format that was introduced at Tasmania last year.  It’s an elimination-style qualifying that puts more emphasis on Friday’s practice session. The bottom 16 cars in Friday practice will start Q1 on Saturday. The top 10 fastest cars in Friday practice will go straight through to Q2.
My first aim for the Tas SuperSprint is to make sure I’m in that top ten fastest on Friday, and then try to get my best qualifying result there.  It can be very hard to get a clear lap because it’s such a short circuit, but if you can luck into a bit of a slip stream you might be able to gain a tenth of a second. That could be the difference between qualifying first or fifteenth!

In terms of race pace, I’ve traditionally had quite a good package with Car 8 there. It looks like we could be in for some wet weather, and that’s always certain to mix things up. The last time it rained at the Tasmania event in 2017 there was a monumental pile up which all three BJR cars were involved in.

Hopefully we can avoid any drama like that this year, especially with an event at Phillip Island the following weekend! We never want a damaged car, but particularly this weekend with such a tight turnaround between race meetings.

Last year I scored my first top-ten race finish at Tassie (9th in the Sunday race) so my goal is to keep that momentum going and leave the Apple Isle with a big bag of points!
