Nick Percat Bathurst supersprint preview

Hi everyone!

I am super excited that it’s the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this weekend and wow, what a way to conclude the 2020 Championship with the Great Race. I travelled up to Bathurst in a motorhome that’s kindly been lent to me from Let’s Go Motorhomes. I made the journey up with Nelson, who is fittingly also completing his Supercars road trip with me.

I did a lap of the track with him, so he knows where the circuit goes, I now expect him to earn his keep and help the engineering team! I feel like this year is the best shot I’ve had at the Bathurst 1000 for a while, especially considering the form of Brad Jones Racing and the speed in the #8 &J Batteries Commodore. Hopefully that bodes well for us in the season finale.

I’ve had a look at the forecast and even though race day is still a few days away, we could be in for some pretty wild weather conditions! I do love the wet around here, and any rain will make the sessions more exciting. I’m predicting that it’s going to be an action-packed race and weekend overall. It does feel a little strange without the crowds we are used to, but I’m sure we are going to put on a mega show for everyone who will be watching at home. I’ve seen first-hand how the teams and everyone at Supercars have been doing everything they can to put on the best show possible.

In the lead up to Bathurst I’ve been hanging in Albury with my co-driver Thomas Randle. We’ve been doing some training, some long bike rides and a lot of pit stop and driver change practice at the workshop. The aim has been getting him ready for his first Bathurst 1000 event.

He’s competing in the Dunlop Super2/ Super 3 category as well, so he will do plenty of laps across the weekend, which is ideal. It also takes the load off him having to do heaps of laps in my car during the practice sessions.

We are really focusing on the race car more so than a qualifying car. In previous years we have probably focused more on making it into the Top Ten Shootout, and often at the detriment of our race pace. This year we are trying for a different tactic and going for a good race car, and hopefully we can still make the Top Ten Shootout but if not it’s not the be-all and end-all.

We need to make sure our race car is fast and ensure that we can be in the mix come the last stint of the race on Sunday. I would love nothing more than to end the 2020 championship in a strong position and deliver Brad Jones a good result in the Great Race.
