I’m looking forward to this weekend’s OTR SuperSprint – the second of two Supercar rounds at The Bend Motorspork Park in South Australia. It’s the same three-race sprint format but on the shorter west circuit layout.
This track design cuts out all the high speed corners that featured last weekend, and instead adds a lot of technical second gear corners. We will still have the same opportunity for passing at turn six, but instead of turning left we’ll turn right. It is a busy lap, and there’s no real rest except for the front straight.
As a team we had a tough event last time out, and definitely didn’t get the results we should have. My R&J Batteries Commodore was definitely fast, but it just didn’t hang on to its tyres during the races. We intend to rectify that because in my opinion we let a minimum of two podium finishes get away from us.
Our focus during the week has been on making sure the rear tyres survive better than they did last weekend. Throw in the predicted mixed weather conditions and it will sure keep us all on our toes!
As a team we’d also love to lock away a finals berth in the Pirtek Pitstop Challenge. Hopefully we can get Todd’s car up there too so BJR has two cars in the fight at Bathurst for the trophy (which we won last year).
Personally, I just want to bag some solid points and close the gap to getting in the top five in the Championship. At the moment there is just 99 points separating me in 7th and fifth-placed Chaz Mostert. Unfortunately, a few recent mechanical issues and accidents outside of our control mean that we’ve slipped away from third, but I think if we can have three strong races it will set us up well for Bathurst.
My Bathurst co-driver Tom Randle will get some laps in Car 8 during the rookie practice session on Saturday morning. He hasn’t driven my car since the test day way back in February, so it’s important for him to get plenty of laps ahead of the Great Race!
