I’m pumped to be heading back to my home state for The Bend SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park, in Tailem Bend. It’s only the second time in over 40 years that the series has had two championship rounds in South Australia in one season, so that’s pretty cool.
As my second home race of the year, I love having the support from the local crowd and always enjoy having my family come out and watch me race.
Last year our BJR cars had good pace there, so I’m looking forward to seeing if we can continue that form again this year. Our cars suit a high grip track, and the new surface at The Bend suits us well, so I’d like to improve on my 5th place finish last year on the Sunday
I think the biggest challenge of the weekend will be the three-part elimination qualifying format. The circuit layout we race on is the 4.95km layout, and it’s such a long lap there (1 minute 48 seconds) that if you make a mistake on a fast lap it will be touch and go to have enough time to get back to the pits, fit tyres and go again.
I personally enjoy the circuit. It offers plenty of passing opportunities, and has plenty of run off, so it doesn’t matter too much if you run wide. There’s minimal tyre degradation which means you get to drive the cars hard every single lap. You can actually do your fastest lap on your in-lap to the pits when the car is light on fuel, which is unique for us.
Currently I sit 9th in the driver’s standings and BJR is 6th in the team’s championship. I feel like we head into this next part of the season with some good momentum, so I hope to keep that going into the next couple rounds and into the endurance events.
It’s cool that there are four of us South Aussies on the grid, including my teammate Tim Slade. The circuit lends itself to evening out the playing field somewhat, so hopefully we see a new race winner on the top step of the podium, even better if it’s a BJR driver!
